Notes on EVELYN MAE -
(also known as "mom")
What shall I do with your exquisite collection of hundreds of elephants….?

One goes through the motions of everyday life trying to do right; observing the cycle of comings and goings of humans. Then someone close to you leaves permanently; inciting a deep contemplation. With pause you pick up to go again, while sensing the vacancy, subtly changed, knowing more of the ebb and flow of life. Perhaps not unchanged by the knowledge, a slave to the passing of time.

I began composing this piece in the eight weeks prior to my mother’s passing. I did not know what an intuition it was at the time. Two weeks before she passed I recorded the cello parts. Each section a single take, with no rehearsal, in the morning before going in to work at my day job. Not listening back to any of it. Three of four takes remained in the composition as it is finished. The final mix of the recorded composition completed four days after her leaving.
It was to be the first composition for the next collection to be released. I share this now with you as I am setting no completion date for that collection. Instead I am letting the emotions and chaos of life determine the outcome.

Evelyn was born into a Quaker family. Craftspersons of the highest degree. I have a deep childhood memory of the house of my Great-Grandmother, all the interior furnishings built by hand. Dark hardwood furniture hand carved. The one extravagance, a collection of bells from all over the world. Hundreds of them all about the house and on a shelf that ran around the perimeter of the great room where all the family gathered. I could not stop myself trying to ring them all and was in constant trouble with the adults for doing so.
Ah…. and here I am.
